experimental shots

we experimented with effects using final cut so we can apply them to our official music video
we experimented with the colour gradient to change the lighting and give the video a different feel
we experimented with spilt screens  and colour gradients

we tried a different effect with split screens  having some of the screens in normal motion  and having some in slow motion to give it a cool effect

target market research

we did some research into little dragon's audience by looking at their followers on twitter.  We found out that they have a mature audience , their ages range from 18 - 32  this age bracket would be the ages that our artist's music would appeal to we could try and market to a wider audience as our artist is slightly younger and may be able to appeal to a range of ages .   we could try and target 15-30 year olds

animatic

here is the animatic for my music video
From producing this animatic i have found out how much time and effort will have to go into the post production stage . hopefully this will give me a rough of idea of the type of clips we would need to film .

target market research

Red Hot Chili Peppers

As the Little Dragon toured with Red Hot Chili Peppers, we figured they must have similar target audiences so here is our research on the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The track, being of the rock style genre is very fast and upbeat. This makes it an attraction to the teenage audience. Their videos and the camera cuts were also fast to the beat of the song which again enhanced this lively teenage feel to the video.

In my opinion the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s target audience is people between the age of 13-21, going through many music changes, and many go through the rock phrase, but also I believe that they will have a audience of people over the age of 25, as they also would have grown up with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The reason I feel this band appeals, is because they are very unique to other American rock bands, and have a huge following from all over the world.

Quotes

“Little Dragon makes pop music for folks who think they hate pop music” - NPR

“Sure to be your sultry summer soundtrack.” - Complex
“If it was a love invocation, it worked. Swoon!” - Fader

“The sweet spot separating Motown and Paisley Park” - Esquire

“…Richly textured and highly vibe-y electronic music that could soundtrack both the dance party (“Night Light,” “Little Man”) and the chill-out room (“Crystalfilm,” “When I Go Out”). - RollingStone.com
“Pressing yet vulnerable, the title track on the new “Ritual Union” sounds like an electro-tweaked update of the sleek Holland-Dozier-Holland-produced hits of mid-’60s Motown. “  - Washington Post

their merchandise is another way of marketing the artist

some of their merchandise that they use the t-shirts and merchandise have their name and logo's on giving the band a brand when people see their fans or buyers wearing them  they may want to find out who the band is or purchase the product .

little dragon's song featured in the vampire diaries during  a key scene in the show ;this is a good way of marketing the band  as Tvd is a popular Tv show with very high ratings people could be introduced to the band because of it and this could help them gain a new type of  audience . when people want to see the scene again they would youtube the video this would remind the viewers of the song and may be eager to purchase the song .

back ground history on the artist

Little Dragon - Road to success

The band have had considerable success in the US, being picked up by radio station KCRW in Los Angeles. Last year they performed a headlining tour of the States which included a performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. In June, their most recent single Sunshine premiered on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show.
The band is fresh off a tour where they supported The Red Hot Chili Peppers and played 15 festivals over the summer.
Although they haven’t gone looking for collaborations, Little Dragon have participated in a considerable number over the last few years. They’ve worked with Gorillaz and with Dave Sitek from TV on the Radio. Nagano has featured on tracks with SBTRKT, DJ Shadow and Raphael Saadiq. Recently the band recorded with Big Boi from Outkast and feature on his new album.

Their live performances take on a jazz-like approach, playing around with the structure of songs, so that no two performances are alike. “We don’t totally freak-out, but definitely as a band that uses a lot of electronic sounds, like to improvise. A lot of bands these days get lazy. The beauty of the vulnerability of being live can easily disappear, so the improv is important. Not maybe as much as going crazy on solos, but rather the philosophy of jazz music of playing together and reaching that high. There are no mistakes, so why not try something different,” Nagano says.

Rihanna's transformation

planning -locations plus brainstorm

we brainstormed some ideas that we think can be incorporated into the music video

On my way home from school I noticed this setting I thought it would be ideal as it is mysterious
wonder - emeli sande
and could be an interesting place to film.We could experiment with the colour grading of the trees to produce a similar effect like Emeli Sande's Wonder music video . in addition the place hardly has any pedestrians passing through so the filming process will go more smoothly . the only problem is that we cannot experience rain as it may become muddy and will be tedious for the artist to perform etc. whilst planning we suggested that a woodsy are would be a cool place to film  for the music video as one of the scenes .

bat your eyelashes- all for gold  nice black and white grading
Another thing that we brainstormed was how the visual would appear. We decided that we would experiment with colour grading ,such as having a black and white visual and transition into colour this could make the video more interesting to view and engage with . in addition we feel that experimenting with colour grading could help the visuals reflect the lyrics . "constant surprises coming my way ."  the change of colour could portray the artist's surprise .
close-up of artist rihanna-only girl

We decided not to challenge some of the basic conventions of a music video; as we have come to the decisions that we should have close-ups of the artist . this is a good way to market  the artist and id ideal to do when introducing a new artist.

during planning we thought that we could experiment with  stop start motion  when editing the film OK Go - end love is a prime example of how effective and creative this technique can be

during planning we additionally considered using split screens whilst editing as demonstrated in beyonce's countdown this will add to the creativity of the music video
